How to Combat Excessive Sweating

Sweating is a natural biological function. When you get too hot, your body sweats. The evaporation of sweat off your skin lowers your body temperature, which prevents overheating. Unfortunately, sweat can cause unwanted body odor to develop. Some people sweat more than others. If you sweat enough that it causes problems in your everyday life, you may have a condition called hyperhidrosis. People with hyperhidrosis sweat excessively. If you're one of those people, here are four steps you can take to remedy the problem.

1. Bring a change of clothes.

If you know that you're prone to excessive sweating, it's a good idea to keep a change of clothes somewhere easily accessible. Get into the habit of leaving a change of clothes at your office and in your car. Stressful situations can increase sweating in some people, and it's not always possible to avoid those situations. When you know you have spare clothing, you may be able to relax, knowing you can handle anything that comes your way. Clean, dry clothes will help you appear more professional while also feeling comfortable.

2. Shower more frequently.

If you have hyperhidrosis, you're probably concerned about unwanted body odors. You can prevent this problem by showering more frequently. People who sweat a lot may need to shower twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. Bathing frequently can help you feel fresh, dry, and comfortable.

3. Utilize extra-strength antiperspirant.

Antiperspirant is an important tool in your sweat-reducing arsenal. It's a type of underarm deodorant that contains an active ingredient which prevents sweating. Traditional antiperspirants may not be enough to combat hyperhidrosis. Fortunately, you can purchase antiperspirant for excessive underarm sweating. This antiperspirant can last all day. Simply apply it in the morning, then go about your daily routine. You may want to reapply it if you work out and shower midday, in case you accidentally wash the product off in the process.

4. Avoid spicy foods.

Certain types of food can increase the amount of sweat you produce. Spicy foods contain capsaicin, the chemical compound responsible for creating a feeling of heat in your mouth. When you eat spicy foods, your body reacts by releasing endorphins. Your nose may start to run and you may start to sweat, as capsaicin tricks your body into thinking it's experiencing an actual burn. People with hyperhidrosis should avoid spicy foods entirely, or at least limit their intake.
